The Theaterhaus Jena in Thuringia was founded shortly after the reunification of Germany at a time when the first large existential fears were being felt. It was the ninth theater in Thuringia and a real wonder of the time after the reunification. The resourceful Department of Culture and the entrancing idea of taking the Stadttheater Jena, which had been without a company and employing a young troupe of actors, to be financed by the then current job creation scheme. The home of the troupe would be the Stadttheater which the decaying socialism had robbed of its audience house and left as a weather-beaten curiosity.
On a misty November night in 1991, nine enthusiastic newly-graduated actors from the famous Ernst Busch School in Berlin came with two tutors to Jena and opened the Theaterhaus Jena. It was a huge success.
In 1993 the job creation scheme came to an end and the troupe and employees of the Theaterhaus founded the 'gemeinnützige Theaterhaus Jena GmbH'—a limited liability company operating as a public utility—as the operating company for the theater. The company was funded equally by the State of Thuringia and the City of Jena.
In 1999 the building was rennovated to offer a modern level of comfort to audience and troupe alike.
In the meantime, the third generation of young actors has inherited the house and extended the good reputation of the theater to far outside the region. They play contemporary works, placing the support and promotion of young authors at the center of attention. In addition there are the productions of the theater's Jugendtheaterclub (Youth Theater Club), themed festivals, selected guest performances and concerts as well as numerous and diverse panel discussions.
